Tabby structures along the Georgia and South Carolina Coast date back to the 1700’s. The availability of oyster shells made it inexpensive and if maintained can last for centuries. Today over fishing and disease is having an impact on the oyster beds.
Georgia and South Carolina today have set up programs to recycle oyster shells today to preserve a healthy coastal ecosystem. To read more on this topic:

In coastal communities today in general you may see crushed shells used in concrete driveways or walkways and sometimes for historic preservation of a structure.
